The Best 2021 Trends for a Stunning Master Bathroom

The master bathroom. It is a place to unwind. It beckons you after a long day at work. It has soft linens and warm, flowing waters that caress your tired muscles. Sometimes there is music and candles involved, scents of wildflowers or spices, and dim lighting that helps us forget about the bustle of everyday life.

This utilitarian room—which was originally designed for tending to nature’s call and maintaining basic hygiene—was once kept far away from the home. Now, however, the bathroom is one of the most tended to spaces in the modern home. In other words, the master bathroom is a big deal. People take this room seriously. It’s why bathroom restorations and renovations offer more ROI when they are done in the master bathroom. Something happened in history that altered the course of how we approached our bathrooms. What was this moment? And how did it lead us to these unexpected trends in 2021?

Let’s explore.

How the Master Bathroom Became Essential to the Modern Home

A 1986 publication called International Collection of Interior Design issues a statement that seemed to point to a telling change in home design trends:

“The era of the utilitarian, puritanical bathroom is over and now it is returning to center stage as the place of luxurious, sophisticated relaxation in the home.”

This statement, some would argue, expressed what was a growing trend at the time to return to the lavish and extravagant spaces that ancient civilizations like the Romans used for their suites and master bedrooms.

In early American history, colonial homes began with one main room where entire families congregated, socialized, ate, and relaxed. As people settled in and wealth grew among the society, different rooms began to serve different purposes. Home’s were built sectioning off different areas for varying purposes: a parlor for guests, a children’s bedroom, and other small bedrooms.

The 1900s saw even more variety in modern home building.  Many rooms were built on the second floor of the home and in 1926, the beloved Sears catalog used the phrase, “master bedroom.”  This trend was already growing, but it was not prominent. Then came the Baby Boomers who were building families after the war. Soon it was popularized and the concept of having one master bedroom and bathroom became the norm.

Since standard plumbing became the norm, the bathroom shifted into a space of personal hygiene. After all, the flush toilet and societal expectations of frequent showers and cleanliness marked the beginning of the modern bathroom.

The Master Bathroom Today — Style, Luxury, & Comfort

Interestingly enough, many of today’s trends are reminiscent of older bathroom models but with a modern twist. Here are the most popular trends appearing in the new year.

  • The Bathroom Oasis – What homeowner wouldn’t want to have a mini-spa in their own bedroom? The master bathroom is becoming a place where people can create a spa-like environment to soak their troubles away. A bathroom oasis often consists of a steam shower, dim and ambient lighting, a soaking tub, and spacious and glowing vanity.
  • The Soaking Tub- Oh yes! The soaking tub is the central component of the bathroom oasis trend. The very classic soaking tub is back with a vengeance. Tubs in the early 20th century tended to be club foot tubs that were raised off the ground. This concept is back by popular demand only designs tend to be a lot less rounded and a little more contemporary.
  • The Floating Vanity– Vanities are big in the master bathroom catalog. The style, color, and material of your vanity can largely define the entire space. A vanity today has endless possibilities for design, drawers, cabinets, sinks, faucets, and more. The hanging vanity
  • Nude Warm Colors – Warm tones can be very modern. They not only create a warm and inviting environment —especially with the right lighting— but they gently whisper soothing tones. They are great for toning things down and for accentuating features like soaking tubs or mirrors.
  • Heated Flooring – This is another talked about trend of the last couple of years. Whether your home is in a place with harsh winters or not, there is incredible comfort in the heated floors that make your bathroom into a calming paradise.
  • New flooring options- Your bathroom floor is key to setting the tone. Along with nude and neutral colors, homeowners are opting for wood-like tiles like porcelain and ceramic.
