Through the Insulating Glass: Energy Efficient Windows for Your Custom Home
Quality windows help you see the world clearly. Of course, when thinking about their custom home, a lot of people might think of windows as an afterthought. They spend most of their time considering the layout of the home, architecture style, appliances, and so forth. People might forget just how much the windows play a role in the look and function of an entire home. Here at Cullers Homes, we value windows because we know that the right window not only looks better but it functions better and saves you money on energy bills. So let’s talk glass.
More particularly, let’s talk about Low-E insulating glass. The Low-E stands for low emissivity. This refers to the ratio of energy radiated from a material’s surface to that radiated from a perfect emitter. The emissivity depends then on the material and on the surface. In other words, the E stands for the glass’ ability to radiate energy. Because glass is a clear material then it re-radiates heat in the form of long wave infrared energy. So to reduce the emissivity of glass, low e-coatings have been developed to minimize the amount of ultraviolet and infrared light that can pass through without compromising the amount of visible light.
This is why a good Low-E glass will allow all the sunlight in, while stopping the ultraviolet and infrared light from coming through, which keeps out the heat. This low e-coating is usually placed on the interior side of the pane surface in order to regulate temperature and reflect the incoming ultraviolet rays from the sun. A home with old windows will lose a lot of energy through the withered single paned glass.
So What Does All This Mean For You As a Homeowner
The Pella Window units that we install here have a variety of features that will make you look at windows an entirely different way. What do Pella Windows do? Let’s take a look.
